Breakwater at Warrnambool
The Port of Warrnambool handled more cargo than the Port of Melbourne in the 1880s and was a thriving deep sea port. In 1874, the government approved a plan to protect shipping by erecting a breakwater made of massive concrete blocks weighing 32 tons each.
Explore the history of this charming fishing village at the end of the Great Ocean Road. Port Fairy, Victoria’s last stop on the famed Shipwreck Coast, has wide streets lined with nineteenth-century cottages, great Norfolk pines, and old stone churches.
